The following costs are want you need to add to the FOB price of the vehicle in Japan to have the vehicle shipped, custom cleared, complied and ready to register in any state in Australia*
GST on the FOB price of the vehicle 10%
Shipping, Custom clearance and delivery charges $3200
Compliance $2500
Auto Imports Fee $1100
If you want a basic guild and cost calculator take the Japan FOB price add 10% for GST + $7000 for costs and that will give you the total cost of the vehicle to your door ready to register.
*State registration costs are different for every state in Australia but you will need to pay a registration fee and stamp duty the same as for any other car if you purchased it locally.
The following is a basic working example:
James buys a 2020 Honda Odyssey for 2,000,000 Yen which costs him $21,000 in Australian dollars, he then has to pay 10% GST when the vehicle arrives in Australia $2100 along with $3200 for shipping and custom charges and finally Auto Imports organises compliance and our delivery fee $2500 & $1100 so his total cost is $29,900
He lives in Victoria so needs a road worthy certificate from a local mechanic to get the car registered costing him around $250 After that he can take the vehicle to vicroads to have it registered where he will pay around $1000 for 1 year’s registration and 4.2% stamp duty on the purchase price of the vehicle ($21000) which is $882.
So his total drive away on the road cost is $32,032
